VF (Variable Fighter) Theory of Evolution

In the story, in the months and years making up to about half a century, the Variable Fighter of "Macross" has been evolving.  What purpose where they made for and how were they used?  This time, this magazine considers that, and searches for the appearance of the truth of the VF, while introducing the mechanism of each VF.  In addition, it takes charge of the setting of the VFs, and we wanted it verified by Dr. Chiba's own comments.

VF-25 Messiah

Anti-optical Weapon Vaporizing Armour

A function added to the passive stealth coating substance spread on the surface of the airframe is to vaporize instantaneously when exposed to high energy, thereby diffusing the beam.  (Approximately 30% is dampened from the output of a beam machinegun grade weapon).

Fold Detection Sensor
A sensor that comprehensively detects fold waves, as well as such things as gravitational fields, magnetic fields, and infra-red rays.  The name is QFS-06.  Various radar, sensors, avionics and so on are enhanced more than existing craft, and they have evolved in the VF-25, too.

Linear Actuator
It is possible to transform the VF-25 in a time that's said to be 2/3's that of existing craft, by not with mechanical actuators, but with ones that have an electromagnetic driving force.  There are also the advantages of such things as a reduction in breakdowns and an increase in maintainability, because the complex mechanical mechanisms have disappeared.

Shield
It is made of the 2nd generation type of strengthened energy conversion armour material that is also used in the armour pack.  It becomes a rectification fin when in fighter.

EX-Gear
(EX-Gear is an) "Interface that's worn", which enables highly accurate flight control due to the pilot's muscles' electrical current.  In addition, there are such things as a medical kit and simple cold sleep functions.  The EX-Gear is also provided with a life preservation function for the pilot, whom should be regarded more than then manned craft (itself).

Internally is stored a chaff, flare, and anti-optical weapon multipurpose discharger.

BLC (Boundary Layer Control)
The BLC function is added to the the flaps at the front and rear of the main wings, and defends against the seperation of the airflow of the wing surface flow and the improvement of the high-angle of attack and low-speed flight characteristics.

Variable Swept Wing
A variable swept wing was adopted into the VF-25, as it is intended for the aerodynamic performance improvement in the atmosphere, and the cases where the VF-25 is operated on space carriers.

Active Stealth Wing
In addition to the anti-radar coating, the main wings are mainly used as heat sinks after combat ends, to avoid infra-red ray detection (during combat).

Stage 2 Thermonuclear Turbine Engine
The maximum instantaneous thrust in the void of space is 1,620 kN (1 engine), and compared to the VF's until now, it's thrust is extremely great.  Even in fighter form when there is 50% or greater output, a built-in light-type of energy conversion armour can be activated for defensive use in the areas of the cockpit, engines and so on, because there is surplus output.

Airframe Outline
The VF-25 is a craft based on the YF-24 Evolution, that includes original improvements by the Macross Frontier fleet.  It is possible to say that the greatest feature is the equipping of the ISC, which is a buffer that deals with inertia, and protects the pilot and airframe.  The ISC has the buffer ability of 27.5 G x 120 seconds (acceleration has an apparent reduction of 27.5 G, and it can be maintained continuously for 120 seconds), and is an LAI original improvement on the model installed on the YF-24.  Moreover, the controls are called Extender Gear (EX-Gear), which performs as a kind of power suit that is worn.  The EX-Gear acts as the interface of the pilot with the airframe, and literally the VF-25 can be precisely controlled by the sensation of one's hands and feet.  Coupled with the basic function improvement of such things as these new mechanisms, engines and avionics, the VF-25 has achieved an exceptional ability improvement that is greater than that of the VFs up until now.

ISC
There is a reduction in the acceleration is it is apparently slowly reduced, as a part of the acceleration that hangs on such things as the airframe and pilot is stored in an internal capacitor.  Fold quartz of high purity that only the large Vajra class can produce is necessary for manufacturing ISC.

Dr. Chiba's Private Opinion [personal view; personal opinion]
The VF-25 is a Macross Frontier independently developed craft based on the YF-24 Evolution.  As the New Unified Forces as well as the Emigrant Fleets want to guarantee predominance of some sort, it doesn't mean that the the entirety of the YF-24's technology was disclosed.

Multi-purpose Sensor Set
It's a multi-mode radar for use in the void of space and anti-ground and anti-air on planets.  When folding, it operates with the fold booster's sub-space (hyperspace) sensor, and before fold-out it can detect the likes of the objective and obstacles.

Vortex Controller
It produces the flow of the air current on the surface of the airframe, and it attempts attitude control by negative pressure.

Consideration and Verification by this Magazine
Since the VF-19, even though the airframes named the VF-22, VF-171 and so on were made, a definite successor (manned) craft was not made by the New Unified Forces.  The main reasons are thought to be: (1) At the point in time of the VF-19, the problem on the pilot's side, was that manned craft had already met the limit.  (2) the New Unified Forces were anxious about such things as rebellions and terrorists using excessively high-performance craft.  (3) A new enemy for whom a high-performance aircraft was needed, did not show up.
However, the existence of the Vajra is recognized in 2048, and the situation changes radically.  The reason for the preceding (3) is overturned, and before a concrete threat, conniving with (2) also cannot be helped.  The force flowing toward development of a new model craft, in short, automatically brings about changes in the distribution of such things as budgets and resources.  The completion of ISC (Inertia Store Converter), which is the solution to the remaining anti-G problem, rapidly moves ahead as well.  There might also have been a change in the system of the development of new model craft, too.  Moreover, even though it's expected that the equipping of the VF-19 with ISC is by all rights economical, new development goes ahead as it's thought that it will protect military jobs, as well as the possibility that the abilities of the Vajra exceed those of the VF-19.  It can be guessed that there were such circumstances in the background of the development of the YF-24 Evolution.
The VF-25 and VF-27 are original developments of the YF-24 by each fleet.  Both craft have ISC whose degree of completion is enough that they are fit for use in actual combat, and the method of controlling the airframes which were made with high performance is more certain and are also original discoveries (in each fleet).  Furthermore, it is presumed that each place in the VF-25 makes use of ISC; a technology that is the first to utilize fold quartz, which originates in the Vajra.  This fold quartz is to become the key to the development of VF in the future.

Two armament packs that are greatly different in character
In the super packs, attaining a high-acceleration is hardly first.  Moreover, a standard of equipment strengthening was also aimed for.  The manufacturing cost is also held down to inexpensive, as a prerequisite of the super packs is that they are disposable.  Adding heavy armament and heavy armour are the main (purpose) of the armoured pack.  Though a booster is also attached to the pack, it's orientation is prevent the mobility deterioration due to the weight increase.  The objective of the boosters are to have the ordinary acceleration of a normal VF-25.  The cost of manufacturing (the Armoured Pack) is also high.

VF-25 Super Pack
Main Booster Unit

The total of the thrust of the main and sub-boosters is 2,940 kN.  Even though the acceleration of a super pack that's fully-loaded with propellant is somewhat inferior to a VF-25 that's lightly equipped (15 G), when the propellant is used and the craft becomes light, acceleration becomes near 30 G.  The VF-25 has the most high-manoeuvrability when it's on the verge of exhausting it's fuel.


VF-25 Armoured Pack
ASWGA

ASWGA is Energy Conversion Armour with a strength several times that of the normal VF-25.  When operating at  maximum performance, it has the armour class strength of a heavy cruiser space battleship, and can also endure a Vajra's largest attack.  The energy conversion armour can be used even in forms other than Battroid, due to the energy capacitor built-into the Armoured Pack.

Compound Sensor
A special sensor is installed on the surface of the airframe, because the installed armour-pack closes over [blocks] the principal equipment.

VF-25 Aegis Pack
DSAF-03

An electromagnetic wave / fold wave sensor.  The Aegis pack is abundantly equipped with devices that use and detect fold waves for anti-Vajra use.  The QV-4000 Ghost is also controlled by the application of fold waves.

The sniper rifle was born as a result of live bullet ordinance being reviewed, as it's said that armaments didn't have dominance due to such things as anti-optical weapon armour and the guidance disruption of missiles.  Due to explosives [gunpowder] and a linear driver, the sniper rifle boasts of a bullet speed said to be 7,490 m/s.

Four Engines

The VF-27 has a total of 4 engines of the same type, 2 in the usual engine bays, and 2 in pods in the main wings.  Even though the maximum thrust of one engine is inferior to that of 1 of the VF-25's engines, they are small and light-weight.

Canard
The VF-27 has 4 canards arranged in an X shape, and they carry out within atmosphere attitude control.  It's a method (of attitude control) that's different from the VF-25, which makes many uses of boundary layer control of the air flow.

BDI System Kai (revised BDI System)

It is a development of the BDI System that was installed in the YF-21.  A more advanced, more direct control is possible, as the cranial nerves are directly linked to the airframe's computer and sensors.


GERWALK
ICS

Even though, compared to a normal human, the cyborg pilot is, by far, tough in regards to G forces, ICS is required as the pilot's brain, etc., are living bodies.  It has a different manufacturer than the VF-25's.


Battroid
Armoured Canopy

The canopy is made of armour, because due to the BDI System Kai, it was no longer necessary to see outside with the naked eye.  The VF-27 can also be controlled by an emergency-use clear canopy, joysticks/levers and pedals.

Beam Gun Pod
In addition to the standard use as a gun pod, the Beam Gun Pod can also be used as a beam grenade with significant power.  In the later part of the production, it was remodelled as a heavy quantum reaction beam gun.

Airframe Outline
Even though it is based on the YF-24 Evolution, the same as the VF-25, the VF-27 is designed only for cyborg pilots.  In addition to the cyborg pilot being able to endure more Gs than a flesh and blood pilot, despite having flesh in it's body, the VF-27's manoeuvrability is greatly improved because the pilot's brain and the airframe's control computer are directly connected.  The airframe itself larger than the VF-25's, and it has a high manoeuvrability and offensive capability, as it is equipped with 4 main engines, a large quantity of propellant, and a large-beam gun pod.  Furthermore, Burera's craft is a model who's VF-27 engines, control system and so on have been fined tuned.

The archaeopteryx [original bird, first bird] of the variable fighters, which was completed partly against (the UN Forces)'s will.

Active Stealth
It is equipped with the initial active stealth mechanism.  It is useful against fighter mounted radar, radard-guided missiles and so on, but it is difficult to deceive large radars and the like.

Conventional Jet Engine
Because the thermonuclear reaction engine wasn't developed in time, (conventional) jet fighter use EGF-127 engines, with the maximum level of thrust in a turbofan engine, were tuned up and installed (in the VF-0).  In combination with the power generating system, (the engines) become the source of power for the operation of the transformation system, laser machine-gun, and so on.  However, the cruising range is pretty short because of the amount of fuel the VF-0 can load.

Ghost (Fighter) Equipment
The back was occasionally equipped with a QF-2200D Ghost as a booster.  Rather than increasing the (VF-0's) high mobility, the nuance is quite large when it is said that the heavy Ghost Equipment only compensates for the decrease in mobility that it causes; however it is also thought to lead to the later FAST Packs and Super Packs.


Outline of the airframe
A testing craft (one of the testing craft actually) of variable fighters that unites technology produced from the analysis of a crashed alien battleship with existing aircraft.
Though the engines cannot operate without optional packs in space because they are conventional jet engines, (the VF-0) has been completed as a VF (variable fighter), with alien technology (OTM) used in the energy conversion armour, (power) generating equipment, capacitors, and so on.

Another Possibility, the SV-51
The SV-51 is designed by a different concept than the VF-0, which is said to be "opposing alien powered suits, battle pods, and so forth".  Though the technological level of the SV-51 and the VF-0 had both merits and demerits, it can be said that the SV-51's concept had gone further ahead than the VF-0's.  If the SV-51's system method had been adopted, the VF history of evolution after that might have been greatly changed.

(In) Flight Refuelling Receptacle
Has an already existing (prior to OTEC) conventional mid-air refuelling probe receptacle.  More than the sacrificing of the amount of fuel onboard to install OTM devices, the VF-0 had high fuel-consuming high-tuned engines installed, so the In-flight refuelling receptacle equipment can also be called the VF-0's lifeline.

Seat With Anti-G Mechanism
It is not an OTM device; though the optimization of the angle of the seat is the subject of the body current stimulant system (the so-called vital point stimulation), in case of high g, it is also possible to handle an increase of about 20 to 30% more.

Consideration and Verification by this Magazine
For the sake of "contact" with a little over 10 m tall giant space aliens, so that a humanoid robot is efficiently moved on its own, given a transformation mechanism to take the form of an aircraft... this is the development concept of the VF series.
In short, the function of battroid = human form was main.  Therefore, the size restriction of the battroid form was strictly observed.
Moreover, because it was confirmed that the aliens used high mobility battle pods, in aircraft (fighter) form, regardless of being in space or atmosphere, the ability of a fighter craft was also sought.
Even though the VF-0's technical problem was the installation of tuned existing jet engines, the balance was broken from the limitations of the size of the dimensions and large output engines that were jammed in.  It's said that the VF-0 had been on the level of it's abilities as a fighter craft only somewhat exceeding those of the latest currently used fighter craft.
Of course, even though they didn't have these limits in the situation where as a variable fighter the 3 forms were used freely.  However, it is said that it was a problem to establish things like flying methods and tactics from zero; which also took time (to establish).
Nonetheless, the abilities of the technical camp and experimental force should be praised as they finished up the VF-0, which were new weapons for combat with a not-yet-known enemy,  using an unknown technology, and were able to endure actual combat while problems remained.

Dr. Chiba's Private Opinion [personal view; personal opinion]
Even if you fight with huge space aliens, the size might not have had to match that of the naked space aliens at all (laughs).  They also use things like battle pods and powered suits.  Concerning the result, the VF-0 and SV-51 class size was consequently good.

The shell's [bullet's] initial velocity is 1,100 m per second.  Though it's destructive power is excessive when used against general aircraft, it is the "standardized" power against the hypothesized opponet of a battle pod equipped with a VF-0 class energy conversion armour.

FCS
A helmet pointing system built into the helmet, that takes aim by following one's eyes, is adopted for shooting the gun pod and laser machine-gun.

Accidentally Discovered GERWALK
Though gerwalk is counted as one of the three forms of a VF, it's origin was an accidental imperfect transformation in the transformation program that occured.  However, with pilot's training (with only a little bit of psychological resistance), gerwalk form's stability and so on, it's predominance during combat was admitted [observed, recognized], and it became one of the formal forms of a VF.

Laser Machine Gun
Though it can be said that the head laser machine-gun is "standard equipment" of a VF, in the VF-0's case, particulars of why it was adopted is that the space efficiency of a laser machine-gun is better than that of a machine-gun and ammunition.

Energy Conversion Armour
Electricity is generated by a surplus of engine power, which is on the mechanism operated in the energy conversion armour; with the prerequisite that the VF-0 must be in battroid form.  However, by a leap in improvement in engine power, the latest VFs are able to partially operate the energy conversion armour in fighter mode.

Fighter Oriented D variant
The manoeuvrability of the D type VF-0, with a clipped delta wing, in below sonic speeds, has been improved by lowering the wing load (compared to the A/S types).  On the other hand, because the main wing is bulky, mobility in battroid mode is somewhat inferior to the A and S types (of VF-0).

Manipulator
Though they can be manually operated, the controls of the sensitive limbs in battroid form are done by AI auto-control by the integrated control support system.  The firing of the gun pod when in battroid form is also determined by aiming dependant on the helmet pointing system, and the limbs' mobility is controlled for steady shooting.  Furthermore, magic arms for repair work and so on are built-into the manipulators.

2 Dimension Thrust Vectoring Nozzle
Even though a conventional jet fighter has 3-dimension thrust vectoring as well, continuing from the VF-0, the VF-1 employs a 2-dimension vertical thrust vectoring nozzle (they are also movable to a degree to the left and right)*.  3 dimension (thrust vectoring) can be seen on later-made General Galaxy (Zentraadi-series) VFs.

Limited [constrained] to what is said as "the same size as giants"
The total height when in battroid was set at 12 m.  It is thought that the purpose of that was for the hypothesized "invade a giant alien's mothership and fight" case.  The fighter form having received that influence, consisted of a small 14 m fighter with comparable engine output, but bore drawbacks in the armaments, loading capacity and so on.  From the time of the VF-11, that thinking of "the same size as giants" changed, and thereafter VFs increased in size and became the same size as an average fighter in the latter half of the 20th century.

Electronic Warfare Specificied VF-1
The VT-1* is another VF-1 that is in charge of an early-warning system, as well as bombardment [bombarding, shelling] control to allied craft.  Though a large booster pack is installed, except for this it has a shortened velocity differential with lightweight equipped general (VF-1) craft, and it seems to be the craft for supporting operations [tactics].

The Long-awaited Thermonuclear Turbine Engine
Equipped with the thermonuclear turbine engine, the VF-1 is radically changed from the VF-0, and is able to attain the ability of almost limitless flight within the atmosphere.  However, the thrust itself isn't that large a difference from the amount of the VF-0, and when in space, the built-in propellant load as well as the time that the VF-1 can operate at full speed is unusually small.

Outline of the Airframe
The mass-production Variable (Space) Fighter that Earthlings made using Zentraadi Overtechnology.
It is a 2-motored fighter and because it has thermonuclear turbine engines built-into it's small airframe, it has large points of difference as well with the prototype VF-0; and these engines enable action within atmosphere and space.
The roll-out of the production type of VF-1 was in 2008.  Though a main candidate for a successor craft, such as the VF-4, appeared afterwards, the VF-1 airframe also continued to play an active role in active service until the development of the VF-11 in the 2030's.
Because there were a lot of manufacturers that took part during the production period, in production itself and so on, a lot of derivative craft, updated versions and so on were produced.


Cockpit
Though the seat is an ejector seat, the cockpit block can be seperated in an emergency and function as a lifesaving capsule.  In a structure similar to the descendant VF-25, in this way, it has the merrit that is said to be the ability to quickly change the nose to one with the built-in avionics that suit the operations.

There are a lot of OP (option) packs, but if you turn it around...
The VF-1, for which option packs are prepared. which are also typical for later VFs, are said to be Armour Packs and FAST Packs.  However, for the VF-1, more than the stated positive strengthening, the things are said with a nuance of the VF-1 is compensating for lacking aspects.


Consideration and Verification by this Magazine
The airframe of the VF-0 is redesigned, and what is completed to act as a space fighter with such things as the installation of thermonuclear reaction engines, is the VF-1.  In actually combat, referred to as Space War I, it is thought that some problems with the VF-1 also appeared.
Being the first to launch, it seems there were concerns about it's operations in the void of space.  When compared to existing fighters, the VF-1 was a size smaller as the size of the airframe was decided to match the height of the Zentraadi in battroid; and there wasn't room for the equipping of such things as propellant and armaments.  Such things  as the equipment named FAST pack and Armoured Pack appear to have been powerful equipment whose significance was to compensate for the insufficient parts (of the VF-1 design).  Moreover, even when operating in the atmosphere, as for the composition of "engines with power significantly more than that of existing fighters installed in a small airframe", it was very likely the VF-1's airframe balance was worse than that of the VF-0.
Nevertheless, in actual combat, combat in the atmosphere didn't really take place.  Instead, in space the main duty of the VF-1 was air defence duties to defend the mother-ship from the enemy force that of a scale that far exceeded expectation.  Even though there weren't completely no cases where an enemy battleship was penetrated by a battroid form VF-1, it is in doubt that the reason for that is because the element that was secured in the VF-1's design (battroid form being the same height as the Zentraadi) came at the expense of its abilities in fighter form.  Might the weakness have resulted from there not having been any actual combat experience with the Zentraadi?
However, the VF-1 fought a good fight as the sparing partner with the Zentraadi fleet, and it shouldn't be exchanged as the key factor that led the fighting to victory.  Boiling down the concept of the airframe, it is said that the VF-1 is an airframe that didn't achieve comparatively enough big successes.

Dr. Chiba's Personal Opinion
Though there was also a problem concerning the propellant load, compared to the VF-1's heir, the VF-11 and needless to say the airframes on and after the VF-19, the VF-1 has a heavy empty weight.  As a matter of fact, because it's thrust is small, there is actually a possibility that there was a lack of feeling that the VF-1 is a space fighter from it's (limited) mobility.

As the VF-11 feature's an airframe that's larger than the VF-1, it's able to have surplus internal capacity and loading weight.  Therefore, it is easy to remodel and besides derivative craft such as electronic warfare craft and the two-seater reconnaissance craft, several other custom models were also produced.

Large canards are installed in the nose, and while the main wings are also variable rear-swept ones, they have a broader configuration.  And as the wing surface load has been lowered, the VF-11's manoeuvrability has been improved at below subsonic speeds.  As one of the goals of the development of the VF-11 was "activity at emigrant planets", it is designed to give priority to operation within an atmosphere.

Enlarged Fuselage
Even though the total length in fighter form 15.5 m, about 1.3 m larger compared to the VF-1, the VF-11's capacity (payload) has increased by more than that numerical value.  However, the total height of 12.9 m when in battroid hasn't changed from the VF-1.  It's possible to infer from this notable characteristic that the Unified Forces were particular in their way of thinking that the VF-11 be identical to the VF-1 and "match the enemy (Zentraadi) Infrastructure".

After the First Interstellar War, it was a long time before the VF-1's successor craft appeared.  Even though intermediary craft were developed, such as the VF-4, as far as a newly developed official style successor craft was concerned, they had to wait until the introduction of this VF-11, whose deployment started in the 2030s.  Even though at that moment more than 20 years had passed since the introduction of the VF-1, compared to the approximate 20 years from the introduction of the VF-11, it was an extremely slow development.  This is from the division of resources to such things as the Earth Regeneration Plan and the Mankind Seeding Plan; and the largest reason is that during those 20 years, a large (new) external enemy didn't appear.
Still, the reality of the battles in the First Interstellar War was that there were a lot of situations where the VF-1 was encircled by an overwhelming number of enemy and battles of 1 vs. a great-many were forced onto the VF-1.  Nevertheless, in considering that the VF-1 fought to the bitter end of the War, it's also possible that the VF-1 was thought to be sufficient if it opposed the Zentraadi, who (are considered to) not develop their armaments.
However, as was brought up at the time of the VF-1, such things as the performance and airframe concept didn't have to be entirely perfected.  That being the case, if you develop an airframe that suits the tactics established by the VF-1, more and more the arrival at the conclusion that damage to your camp [group of the same ideological beliefs] will be reduced is a truism.
An airframe born as a result of that might be the VF-11.  The VF-11 is something who's establishment originates in such things as the VF-1's airframe concept and operational tactics, and the saying might exist that "essentially it should have the appearance of the VF-1", which has been incrementally updated from combat experience and technological progress.

Dr. Chiba's Personal Opinion
At the time that the VF-11 was made, "it has a performance better than the VF-1!" was bound to have come out.  However, it's plain when compared to the later made VF-19 (laughs).  Nevertheless, if a typical pilot boards it, the VF-11 may be at the very limit of the line of being able to be handled without difficulty.

Other than the shield equipped on the left manipulator of the VF-11, a bayonet has been added to the gun pod.  These armaments that weren't seen on the VF-1 are for hypothesized cases of hand-to-hand combat with Zentraadi (battle pods).

The head laser machine-gun, which has so far been installed in the lower part of the fuselage in fighter form, has come to be installed in the upper part of the fuselage; and it has become possible to fire it toward the rear of one's own craft when dogfighting.

Observing the Evolution into Super Packs

The super parks are extremely large compared to the fuselage; and compared to the "forced" look of the VF-1's Super Packs, the VF-11's Super Packs have a natural style.  They are not equipment to compensate for option packs, but their appearance is understood to have been changed to smoothed out natural equipment.

Two GERWALK Patterns that are Used For Different Things

Because of it's unique fuselage shape, the VF-17 has a problem with its flight characteristics, especially with low-speed flight.  Accordingly, even though the GERWALK form is heavily used when at low-speed, the VF-17 has 2 forms of GERWALK; a high-speed combat form that fights (as a GERWALK) with bent arms and beam guns, and a hand-to-hand combat form with the arms extended the same as the existing GERWALK form.

Weapon Bay
The armaments are in internal weapon bays, in order to improve the VF-17's stealthiness.  The weapon bays are in the lower extremities of both legs.  Even though the gun pod is stored separately, it can be fired when stowed away through a firing port that's installed in the legs (fighter form).

Gatling Gun Pod
Fold and close up the stock of the multi-purpose gun pod, and it can be stored in the leg weapon bay.  The gun pod is equipped that enables the gun to be fired even when it's held near the hips.

Surplus Payload
The VF-17's load-ability is high because the fuselage has great volume and a tenacious structure, and the engine thrust is high.  The VF-17 can also be loaded with all sorts of things, such as special armaments and large sound boosters with in that surplus.

Battroid has also Increased in Size
Probably because of the difference in the airframe concept, the size when in battroid has also increased from the VF-11's 12 m class to the 15 m class.

From a Special Forces Fighter to the Main Force Fighter!?

Originally, even though the VF-17 was a special forces fighter that only a limited number of pilots boarded, making the best use of the VF-17's great augment-ability, it was improved until it became the Unified Forces tentative main fighter.    The VF-171 is a success due to that, and is closer to a reset of the airframe than an expansion of it.  As a result, the VF-17 was reborn as an airframe with a good balance of such things as controllability and cost.  In addition to having the 3rd generation active stealth function due to updates, it also became possible for the VF-171 to use such things as the fold booster and the PPB (pinpoint barrier).  In the Frontier Fleet during the Anti-Vajra war, the VF-171 was given priority.  In addition, the VF-171EX was developed, which advanced the improvements.

Airframe Outline
The VF-17 is an airframe that was developed for difficult, special missions that the VF-11 couldn't achieve.  It was hypothesized for missions that are said to include specifically penetrating enemy positions and pinpoint strikes.  For that reason, the airframe shape is a shape in which passive stealthiness was considered foremost, and it's aerodynamic characteristics are inferior so that it is unsuitable for flight within an atmosphere.  Moreover, to improve its stealthiness, the VF-17 adopted a form where all the armaments are stored in weapon bays within the airframe.  Because of that, the airframe has increased in size.  In addition, even though the weight is also heavy because the armour when in battroid has been strengthened, the VF-17 has speed and acceleration abilities that greatly surpass the VF-11 thanks to engines that have greatly improved thrust.  The design is by General Galaxy.

Consideration and Verification By This Magazine

The VF-17 was developed for special missions; the penetration of enemy territory by a lone craft (or extremely low numbers of craft), making pinpoint strikes, and withdrawing.  This application and tactics, even though its an operational method and tactics that differ from the ones that existing VFs use, might have been considered an extremely effective measure due to the combat lessons of The First Interstellar War's Bodolza Fleet Attack Operation.   The tactics of a single craft invading enemy territory and beating their centre can be interpreted as the promotion of the tactic of "a VF being the match of one thousand", which was originally requested in a lot of cases.  In short, existing VFs, which mainly had a fighter aircraft concept, were done in the VF-17 as mainly a fighter-bomber element.
The VF-17, above all, was used like that at first.  Moreover, the VF-17s situation is that it's an airframe that was built for that role.  For that reason, there are numerous facets of a VF that have been sacrificed,  such as aerodynamic performance within an atmosphere.  However, as its the special forces members who board the VF-17 and go on special missions, it is necessary for them to be able to cover those types of sacrifices by throughly training them as crew (even though its required that they be mentally tough when considering their mission contents, this is also something that is cultivated by training.)  Even though the VF-17 is naturally an airframe for the elite, the improved performance of the VF-19/21, craft developed after the VF-171, has caused that tendency to become stronger.
When it entered the 2050s, a redesign of the VF-17 was carried out, with an eye on the airframes augment-ability.  The redesign became the VF-171, the Unified Forces main fighter.  The VF-171 has characteristics that are the opposite of the first development of the VF-17, and it became a craft that general pilots pilot.  This indicates that the performance of the VF-17, as a manned VF, is almost at the threshold of the limiting value.

Dr. Chiba's Personal Opinion
The VF-17 is a highly augment-able airframe because its internal capacity is immensely large and the airframe is strong.  The Unified Forces seems to have endlessly continued to use it while updating it.  It's situation is like that of the real aircraft, the B-52.

Forward Swept Wings
The YF-19, with its combination of nose canards and boundary layer control, was able to do unparallelled acrobatic flight within an atmosphere.  However, this special characteristic was neutralized in the production type of VF-19 because the pilot needed advanced flight skills for it.  In addition, when doing ultra-high speed flight, the wings are stowed away as shown in the figure.

FAST Pack
There aren't large verniers on the FAST packs, as they are mainly composed of drop tanks and main verniers that are additional attitude controlling high-manoeuvrability thrusters.  Moreover, as they have been prepared as boosters for use both within and outside an atmosphere, they are also equipped with a large vernier, as pictured here.

Active Stealth

The airframe that Shinsei Industry submitted to the Unified Forces Next Main Variable Fighter Selection Competition "Project Super Nova".  Due to the AVF plan, innovations such as the 3rd generation active stealth and pinpoint barriers were included in it.  Moreover, the VF-19 has manoeuvrability due to use of forward swept wings and engines of significant power which make a clear distinction from VFs to date.  Consequently, it has flight characteristics whose performance common pilots cannot draw out.  Even though the YF-19 prototype model won the competition and was also produced as the VF-19 mass-production model, it didn't attain a full-blown deployment to supplant the VF-11.

If the viewpoint on the the VF-19's abilities of folding as a lone craft and breaking through an air defence net changed, then it was a threat.  Since if it was being used for terrorist activities, it would be a matter of grave concern.  It is too powerful!  Perhaps this is the reason why the Unified Forces wasn't proactive in the VF-19's mass production.


Vortex Controller
It blows gas out of the surface of the airframe and the vortex that is produced controls the airframe's attitude.  Naturally, it is effective only in an atmosphere.  A similar device is also used in the VF-25.

Consideration and Verification By This Magazine

Precise performance requirements from the armed forces existed in the Next Generation VF Development Plan, the AVF Project.  They were such things as 1) a single craft being able to fold, 2) has a high-grade stealth ability, and 3) has a higher dogfighting ability.  Even though its not clear what kinds of hypothesized tactics, use and so on these demands were submitted for, requirements such as 1) and 2) might have been for a small number of craft making a pinpoint attack on the enemy's center, similar to the hypothesized missions of the VF-17 when that craft was developed.
However, this, if it's called it, is an "attack".  In a "defence" situation, directed toward the object of defence, such as fleets, its necessary to have the number of fighter craft to develop a force in order to do that.  The ability for 1 fighter craft to battle a great many, which is the same as the existing tactical ideology, was demanded of the VF-19 (for that reason, if anything, the VF-19 was likely to become defensive in the role of "main fighter", which is deployed in a large quantity).  It is the advanced dogfight ability of 3) which is required here.  In other words, the AVF project might not have been a project that developed a multi-role strike fighter that can cover both offence and defence.  Even though the VF-19 is a general-purpose fighter craft if one alters one's wording, it is possible to say that compared to the standard strategies at the time of its development, the level of "general purposefulness" that was demanded of the VF-19 was too high.
Even though the prototype YF-19 was a high-performance craft that satisfactorily achieved the objectives, there was a steep rise in the airframe cost, and the high G load that came from the high manoeuvrability not only chose the pilots, but also required time to train them for that manoeuvrability.  For those reasons, even though a production type of VF-19 was mass produced, the number was small.  While it aimed at being the successor of the VF-11, which was successfully operated as a general-purpose craft, the VF-19's substance is equivalent to a special forces fighter craft...... it seems that this isn't an airframe named the VF-19.

YF/VF-19 Excaliber
Auxiliary Seat

There's an emergency-use seat that's installed in the rear of the cockpit.  Other than supporting the pilot, aircraft operating devices are also attached to the seat and its possible to operate the VF-19 to some degree from the auxillary seat in an emergency.

Fold Booster
A fold booster can be installed on the top part of the VF-19's fuselage.  The fold boosters at that time could fold about 20 light-years (one-way only).

Weapon Bays
Weapon bays, in which missiles can be installed, are built into the outer-side of the engine pods.  This is a measure that's been taken to raise the stealthiness of the VF-19 a little.  However, the gun pod is installed on the underside of the airframe, like the VF-1.

Pinpoint barrier
The VF-19 is the first VF to use it.  Even though it can only be used in battroid form because of the large quantity of energy that is necessary for its operation, it is most suitable for hardening the "fist" in hand-to-hand fighting.

Even though there are production types of YF-19, other than the abolishment of such things as the canards on the assumption that the production VF-19 would be used in space, the control characteristics have also been revised to a stable orientation.  Furthermore, the model that has had the most number produced is the F type.

Pinpoint Barrier
Similar to the VF-19, the YF-21/VF-22 became the first variable fighter to be equipped with a pinpoint barrier.  In addition to protecting the manipulators in combat where the pilot flings the YF-21/VF-22 itself at the enemy, the pinpoint barrier was also used to strengthen the shield.

VF-22 Series that Repealed the BDI System
The BDI System that was intended for such things as airframe serviceability and pilot adjustment problems was greatly simplified in the production type of VF-22.  As the BDI System became a control system that differed from the original design, pilots who were more competent and with excellent physical strength were needed to draw the airframe's performance out to the limit.

The Ghost is the True Next Generation Fighter!?
If one considers the pilot training and loss, then the Ghost's cost is cheap, and its manoeuvrability is greater than that of the YF-19/21.  It was likely to have become the main fighter if the Sharon Apple Incident hadn't occurred.

BDI System
It is a ground-breaking system that integrates the airframe sensors and control system with the pilot, and controls and flies the airframe by brainwaves.  More than being direct with no time lag, and even though it is able to accurately control the craft, there are a lot of problems to be overcome, such as the stability of the system.  BDI was restricted to a pilot support system in the VF-22 production type.

ISC
Even though the YF-21 is equipped with the Kirikomera [Quiliquomela] Temporary Gravity and Inertia Vector Control System, which was installed in the Kwadoran Roo [Queadluun Rau], compared to the airframe's performance, it couldn't be said that the ISC system had sufficient ability.  Still, the ISC that is installed in the YF-24 Evolution is a development based on this system.

Diverse Flight Forms
The main wings, which are made of a special material, can take a variety of flight forms, such as being bent for high-speed flight, or are able to switched over to a high-manoeuvrability mode by detaching the arms and legs.  The wing's potential abilities exceed those of the YF-19.

The YF-21, which is the base of the VF-22, is an airframe that originated in the AVF Project and was designed with an eye on becoming the next main fighter, the same as the YF-19.
However, doubt remains when it is asked if the YF-21 was really developed with an eye on becoming selected as as the main fighter.  Even though a tenacious Zentraadi pilot is used as the test pilot in order to endure powerful G forces and it's highest performance is attained if it can be controlled well,  the YF-21 adopts the BDI System, which has instability in its operation.  It cannot be thought of as a design premised in being mass produced as a main fighter (it's possible to say that there are also similar doubts about the YF-19).
Nonetheless, although the pilot was consequently sacrificed, it is true that the YF-21, which displayed abilities that exceeded the Ghost, has high performance.  As was expected, the YF-21, which was defeated by the YF-19 in the competition, in the form of the VF-22, will be used as a special forces aircraft alternative to the VF-17.
In this way, even though the VFs which were developed since the VF-17 have the impression that they tended to become special forces aircraft with small numbers produced, it might have been the policy that this situation leaves the simple air defence missions to AI weapons (Ghosts) by the New Unified Forces at the time, and uses the manned aircraft only for special missions that an advanced assessment of the situation requests.  In short, a certain meaning is that it's also possible to say that the age of manned VFs is ending.  Even though the competition is completed, mass production doesn't advance for either the YF-19 or YF-21.  And the current after that, which has the VF-171, a craft that's an improvement on an existing model, and the Ghost becoming the main weapons, is that the Unified Forces is hesitant in such things as it's strategy ideas and treatment of VFs.

It seems that the Unified Forces had planned to have the Ghost win against the airframe that had won the competition between the YF-19 and YF-21, and declaring "the next main fighter is an unmanned fighter!".  The limiter release mode of the YF-21 might have been prepared as a countermeasure when the YF-21's development staff noticed the existence of the Ghost.

The Key Technologies that Prompted the Development of VFs
It's been about 50 years since the VF-1 of the 2000s.  The latest VF-25 has thrust which is more than 10 times that of the VF-1, and is equipped with a great number of devices and was achieved with the rapid progress of development.  Here, let's examine the technologies that are key to the evolution of VFs like that.

The VF which has Continued Absorbing Not-Yet-Known Technologies and Evolving
If you plainly state the points that successive generations of VFs evolved at, it is likely to become the three points of: in what way is the ability of the engine raised to improve speed and manoeuvrability?  How does the pilot control the airframe which has attained high-performance as a result of that?  And, how do you fight against a numerically overwhelming superior enemy?  The technology that as been produced so far is summarized in the improvement of any of those 3 points.
And, many of these technologies are technologies that were attained out of the existence of hostilities that have come to the human race.  VFs to battle with unknown enemies get the baptism of new technologies every time the unknown becomes the well-known, and are upgraded.  From now on, too, VFs and the human race will encounter unknown existences and will evolve every time they fight.

The Struggle Against the Walls of Distance and Speed
Thermonuclear Reaction Engines

Although the thermonuclear reaction engines that had been first used by the VF-1 were able to do almost limitless aviation within the atmosphere, they needed propellant in the void of space and the time that they were able to act was limited.  Moreover, it wasn't possible to say that the initial (VF-1) engines had enough thrust.  Therefore, decreasing the propellant consumption while raising the thrust became the proposition.  If thrust is examined, then it could be analyzed that starting with the engines that were installed in the VF-17, there was a large innovation, and subsequently, there was an even greater breakthrough accomplished with the VF-25 (accurately with the YF-24).

Caption 1: VF-1
The thrust is 11,500 kg per engine, and the thrust to empty weight ratio is 1:1.7.  It's a level that's a little bit better than the fighter aircraft that are currently used.

Caption 2: VF-25
The thrust is 1,620 kn per engine, which amounts to about 160,000 kg.  The thrust to empty weight ratio has grown to 1:37.


Fold Navigation
Even though space battleship class vessels have been equipped with fold navigation instillations since before, the device was miniaturized and was able to be installed on VFs as a fold booster from the YF-19 onwards.  Due to the equipping of this fold booster, the breadth of such things as tactics and operations that a VF undertakes have also been broadened.  Even though it was a challenge to raise the distance and accuracy that a fold can do, due to the discovery of fold quartz, it flies across fold dislocations.  They are also in the process of implementing this next generation fold technology that also doesn't have any time lag.


Is Fold Quartz The Thing that VF's will Carry From Now ON?
Such things as folds without time-lag and ISC are results by means of Fold Quartz, which is created by Vajra.  It is a field that's also exceeding Protoculture originating technology, and the results of that research are sure to be included in VFs from now on.

Gravity and Inertia Controlling Suppressing VF-22S

The Kimerikora [Quimeliquola] Temporary Gravity and Inertia Controller, which was built-into the Kwadoran Roo [Queadluun Rau] Zentraadi Battle Suit, is built into the VF-22 (YF-21).  It became the initial example of advanced gravity control in VFs.  However, even tenacious Zentraadi pilots suffer from G's during high-manoeuvrability, and to the extent of making a VF remarkably high-powered, it isn't possible to say that it was an effective device.

ISC (EX Gear) VF-25
The Kimerikora [Quimeliquola] Temporary Gravity and Inertia Controller is the model of ISC.  ISC includes improvements on the Kimerikora Controller and achieved the degree of perfection where it was able to endure use in combat in the YF-24 Evolution.  The VF-27,. which has an even higher performance, is equipped with an original improved version of ISC.  Moreover, the VF-25 also uses the suit-type man-machine interface EX-Gear which achieves pilot protection that is up to the task of accurate control of an airframe that has made progress in high-speed and high-manueverability.

Cyber-grunts, a Counter-Measure on the side of the Person who Boards a VF
The VF-27 was designed on the premise that it'd be flown by pilots who have been turned into cyborgs (Cyber-grunts).  Due to mechanization G resistance is also high, and advanced control is possible because the airframe is controlled by a direct link with the pilot.


To Fight Against Powerful Opponents
Reaction Warheads

Even though they are being classified as a kind of mass-energy conversion armament, their use dealt a serious blow to the Zentraadi Fleet in the First Interstellar War.  Since then, even though they were a "last resort" armament for the human race, in the Anti-Vajra War the Vajra produced a resistance to reaction warheads because of their feedback ability.  And the predominance of that was a jolt.

Active Stealth
Even though its a device that's been equipped on VF's from the VF-0, it's the Third Generation Type from the YF-19 that displayed a function that showed constant perfection.  As it is able to deceive electro-magnetic waves (radar waves) and but not by depending on the airframe's shape, it ensures both the aerodynamic performance and secrecy at the same time.  It's effects are unclear against beings that are well-known to be beyond the limits, such as the Vajra.

PPB (Pinpoint Barrier)
Attacks are nullified by using a space-time distortion.  Airframes from the YF-19 have been equipped with a PPB for VFs.  With the exception of the VF-27, the PPB can only be used in battroid form because in other modes, the majority of the engine power is used for other purposes.  For that reason, the implication is that it is often used to protect the manipulators doing such things as hand-to-hand combat (fist fighting).

MDE Warheads

MDE is an abbreviation of Micro-Dimension Eater.  Using a fold quartz micro-crystal in the warhead, material is shot into the super dimension within the extremely limited effective range (it's almost impossible to defend against it).  MDEs are easy to use because the warheads can be exchanged on existing armaments, and they are also effective against the Vajra.
